New Student FAQ

I’m interested! How can I get involved?

  • “Like” us on Facebook and sign up for our mailing list – Like us on our Facebook page to stay updated and email our Vice President, Naomi Duru, at  nduru@wustl.edu to receive our weekly emails about our club news, events, and opportunities.
  • Attend a weekly meeting – One weekends when we aren’t travelling or hosting conferences, we have meetings on Sunday afternoons. These one-hour meetings usually feature a Global Talk, a student-led talk and discussion about a particular current event or global issue, or focus on training our debate and speech skills.
  • Sign up to staff WUMUNS/ WUMUNC – We host one conference each semester. The conferences have become beloved campus and club traditions and truly bond our club together as we dedicate a weekend to little sleep and a lot of fun. Sign up to get connected to a committee and staff team!
  • Attend the next open intramural conference – These on-campus conferences usually take place from 10am-3pm a couple Saturdays a semester and often feature real WUMUNS/ WUMUNC committees created by our own members. They are a great low-commitment way to get a taste for model UN and get to know others in the club very quickly. Participation in open intramurals is required to be considered for the travel team.

What is Model UN?

We have dedicated a whole page to this! Check out MUN 101 to learn more about what Model UN is and why we love it.

Do I need any prior experience in Model UN, debate, or international relations?

No! Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds and areas of study, and some of our best delegates never did Model UN until they found WUIRC.

Is there a recruitment or tryout process to join WUIRC?

No! We welcome new members year-round and our ongoing weekly meetings and regular open intramural model UN conferences guarantee that there is always some way to get involved. Consideration for the travel team, however, does require participation in at least one open intramural conference.

What’s the time commitment like?

The time commitment for WUIRC varies from person to person and is completely up to you and your own interests. Some students just take an afternoon to participate in one of our intramural Model UN conferences on campus or a weekend to staff WUMUNS and WUMUNC. Others are highly involved in our activities and community. On average, our regular members usually travel and compete in at least one conference a semester, take a weekend to staff WUMUNS (in the fall) and WUMUNC (in the spring), participate in intramural conferences (around two Saturday afternoons/ semester), and set aside an hour a week to attend our Sunday meetings.
