The Washington University International Relations Council (WUIRC)’s mission is to develop global leaders outside of the classroom through Model United Nations and increased dialogue about international issues, promoting continued learning, cross-cultural understanding, and global citizenship on campus and beyond.
How does WUIRC…
Promote Model United Nations on and off campus?
Initially founded as the Model United Nations club, Model UN remains central to WUIRC’s mission as an interactive activity that encourages cross-cultural understanding and develops individual leadership, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. In addition to competing in conferences across the country, WUIRC actively develops the Model UN circuit in the local community and Midwest region. WUIRC co-sponsors the World of Politics Pre-Orientation program for incoming freshmen and hosts nationally- recognized conferences at the high school and collegiate levels (WUMUNS and WUMUNC).
Develop global leaders?
While Model UN helps our members build necessary skills for global leadership, WUIRC also holds weekly meetings that feature Global Talks (student-led discussions about a particular current event or global issue) or focus on developing debate and speech skills. In addition, WUIRC also provide numerous leadership opportunities within the council through our Executive Board and WUMUNS/ WUMUNC Secretariat.
Enrich the Washington University student experience?
As part of the Washington University community, WUIRC actively welcomes students of all different backgrounds, levels of experience, and interests by hosting regular meetings and open intramural Model UN conferences throughout the year. In addition, WUIRC also hosts many social events ranging from laid-back potlucks to dinners in downtown St. Louis, fostering an active community of students with a deep appreciation for international affairs.
